Who Qualifies?

Organizations that typically are eligible for nonprofit rates include:

  • Agricultural
  • Educational
  • Fraternal
  • Labor
  • Philanthropic
  • Religious
  • Scientific
  • Veterans
  • Some political committees

Individuals are NOT eligible for nonprofit rates; also, not every organization is eligible, even though you may think it qualifies based on the list above. For example, business leagues, chambers of commerce, social and hobby clubs, and certain political organizations usually are NOT eligible.

Your organization may apply for and receive nonprofit authorization, but you're not quite finished - there are restrictions as to what may be mailed at those rates. For instance, there are restrictions on the amount and kind of advertising you can do. It’s always best to check with your local business mail entry staff before you design and print your mailpiece.

Non-Profit Rates

Nonprofit postage rates are lower than standard mail rates, but not everyone can qualify. Even though an organization is Non-Profit, it does not automatically give them Non- Profit status with the US Postal Service. Organizations wishing to mail at non-profit Standard Mail rates first must be authorized by the US Postal Service. Then, they must make sure that the material being mailed complies with strict requirements for nonprofit rates. Nonprofit postage rates are available only for domestic mail, not for international mail.

Before sending out a Non-Profit mailing, make sure the company whose name is the return address on the mail piece qualifies with the post office for Non Profit Status. To process a mailing as Non-Profit, an organization can do one of the following:

  • To get Non-Profit status with the US Postal Service, it requires a special application from the post office and supporting documentation. The application process can take up to 4 weeks for authorization (Form 3624).
  • If the organization already has Non-Profit authorization with a different post office and they wish to use our permit, the organization must apply for Additional Entry for Non-Profit Status (Form 3623) with an accompanying letter or the organizations letterhead requesting such, signed by an executive or the organization.
